When is it Necessary to Have Your Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Your wisdom teeth are an extra set of molars located at the back of your mouth. When there isn’t room for them to grow in, they become impacted, resulting in pain, infection, or possible damage to the surrounding teeth and jaw tissue.  The teeth can partially erupt, or stay lodged underneath the gum line. Impacted wisdom teeth can push against the second molar, toward the back of the mouth, or against the cheek.

Impacted molars may not always cause immediate complication, but this does not always mean they should be left in place. Even when no symptoms are present, wisdom teeth can still cause gum disease or lead to the development of cavities. Additionally, the teeth can start shifting out of place at a later point. We’ll recommend removing all impacted wisdom teeth to prevent potential future complications.

A Simple but Effective Procedure

Prior to undergoing the procedure, we administer anesthesia or sedation depending on the complexity of the case. Simpler extractions tend to only require a local anesthetic, while more severe cases may benefit from IV sedation to ease anxieties or a general anesthesia for complete unconsciousness during the surgery.

Removing impacted molars when no complications exist is similar to any simple extraction. When the impaction leaves the tooth embedded in the bone, we’ll remove sections of the tooth to minimize the amount of bone removed as a precaution.

We provide all our patients with comprehensive post-procedure care instructions. These steps are essential to avoid dry socket, swelling, or excessive bleeding. Staying hydrated, applying ice packs and gauze, avoiding tobacco, and limiting food and drink intake following surgery will help aid in the healing process.
